The Three Elements of Self-Compassion
Self-compassion helps a person quiet their inner-critic and remove fear of judgment so proceeding with change, growth, or being can be done with kindness and care.
There are three elements of self-compassion.
Self-kindness vs. self-judgment. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt and a kind, accepting attitude rather than a shoulda, coulda, woulda attitude.
Common humanity vs. isolation. Remind yourself that what you are going through is relatable. Many people have experienced this sort of feeling before rather than believing you are “in this alone”.
Mindfulness vs. over-identification. Practice staying in the present-moment and offer yourself some grace rather than getting stuck over analyzing and ruminating.
Try it out while running. What self-critical thoughts come up for you when you run? How could you speak to yourself with kindness about this thought? How does this situation tie you to others? Maybe it is a common situation, it is likely that others have experienced this same thing. Forgive yourself for any imperfections, and remind yourself that it is ok that you are not perfect; this is how you grow.
